ORGANIZATION INFORMATION: The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce (OCCC) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization formed in 1985 by local business people. With over 300 members, the organization’s mission is to promote and advocate for business and trade in the Oakland Asian community, and support the continued vibrancy of Oakland Chinatown.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce (OCCC) seeks an Executive Director to oversee day-to-day operations of OCCC, as directed and in collaboration with OCCC’s Board of Directors. The ideal candidate will have experience in similar non-profit leadership roles and/or relevant professional leadership positions. This role requires project management, experience managing staff, effective communication, event management, relationship management with community stakeholders, and excellent customer service to members. The position is based in-person at the OCCC office in Oakland Chinatown, with flexibility for a hybrid schedule. Salary commensurate with experience, with performance-based bonus opportunities, reflecting our commitment to community-driven work.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Executive Director will oversee projects and staff and collaborate with the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Implement and execute initiatives directed by the Board of Directors and/or Executive Committee through the President of the Board or their designees. ● Provide input and ensure the organization’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives are implemented and kept within the Mission and Vision Statement set forth by the Board of Directors. Provide regular reporting to the Board to measure progress on goals and objectives. ● Attend meetings of the Board of Directors, social and community functions, city government meetings, and professional seminars, as defined by the Board of Directors. ● Coordinate committee meetings and oversee the preparation of the Board of Directors’ meeting packages. Inform the Board of Directors regarding the current state of all programs, initiatives, and activities. ● Maintain an accurate and up-to-date event calendar, website, and social media content throughout the year and present event reports at every Board of Directors’ meeting. ● Oversee public relations strategies and maintain excellent rapport with the community, government, and individuals through participation and appropriate conduct. ● Maintain positive and effective relationships with the Board of Directors, members, donors, sponsors, and stakeholders while actively managing all the business affairs of the organization. ● Advocate for issues impacting Oakland Chinatown, the Oakland Asian community, and OCCC members, and maintain positive relations to boost economic development for our members and the community. ● Collaborate with other Chambers, non-profit organizations, community organizations, and businesses, where necessary, to provide stronger influence when advocating for issues impacting or benefiting Oakland Chinatown, the Oakland Asian community, and OCCC members. ● Recommend and work with all committees by providing a timeline and summary of all programs and projects for the Board of Directors’ review and approval. ● Maintain suitable office standards to project a professional atmosphere for OCCC. ● Effectively manage staff and office operations, including in person availability during regular business hours, organizational records, staff vacation schedules, on-time rendering and collection of invoices, and supervision of team members, contractors, and volunteers, in a harassment-free work environment.
Event Management and Fundraising:
● Improve OCCC’s financial stability by effectively executing plans for revenue generating events, including the Lunar New Year Bazaar, Spring Banquet, and StreetFest, and collect membership dues and sponsorships. ● Actively secure grants and manage projects, including projects secured through grants, that will enhance economic development in Oakland Chinatown and the greater Oakland Asian community. ● Ensure OCCC’s finances are managed in accordance with the Board’s direction and priorities.
Chamber Members
● Grow OCCC membership each year in all categories and reach goals/objectives as set by the Board of Directors. ● Solicit new members, follow-up on new member prospects, and strive for retention of current members. ● Conduct regular office hours with OCCC members and prospects. ● Coordinate monthly member mixers to provide resources for members and gain new member prospects. ● Manage an up-to-date member database.
Staff Management
● Oversee and manage staff while fostering a positive work environment. ● Provide clear direction and staff assignments for all Chamber activities to ensure compliance with established objectives and program/grant management plan. ● Manage all staff training and development programs, including cross-training, while adhering to the employee handbook, job descriptions, and implementation of all administrative policies governing employees. ● Assess and manage workload of team to maximize productivity. ● Conduct timely employee evaluations and report results to the Executive Committee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
● At least 3 years minimum of leadership and project and people management experience. ● Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Public/Business Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Political Science, or a closely related field. ● Effective multitasking abilities and efficiency in time management with ability to manage deadlines under pressure. ● Must be a fast-learner and adapt to a changing environment. ● Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) ○ Capacity to effectively communicate information to various stakeholders through oral and written means; adaptable communication style. ● Results-oriented: comfortable with goals, accountability, independence, initiative, and teamwork. ● Proficient knowledge of the following systems/applications/programs: ○ Google workspace (Doc, Forms, Sheets, Slides, etc) ○ Social media (WeChat, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) ○ ChamberMaster/GrowthZone or similar membership management platform ○ Website (Wordpress, Squarespace, Wix, or platform used by the Chamber)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● Must be flexible to attend meetings in the evenings, on the weekends, and out of town events and conferences. ● Must be willing to travel occasionally as needed. ● Bilingual or multilingual in Chinese - fluency in Cantonese/Mandarin and English highly preferred (oral and written) ● Familiarity with and passion for Oakland Chinatown and surrounding communities ● Non-profit leadership experience

SALARY:
● Salary range starting at $75,000 with additional benefits. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience. ● The position is eligible for a performance-based annual bonus.
